The Primary Difference Between AC and HVAC Systems

Nowadays, homeowners choose comfort as the number one priority in their homes. Style or design is still part of the biggest decisions every homeowner must brainstorm, but comfort seems to top all of the must-have lists in every home.

By choosing comfort, one of the greatest confusions that homeowners have is deciding whether to have an AC or Airconditioning unit or an HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) system. While these two are very different in terms of purpose and use, still a lot are confused as to what separates the two.

What is an AC system?

AC or air conditioning is a system that is designed to cool the air in your home. They are generally used just for air cooling, and it is essentially needed during the hot seasons.

There are two basic air conditioner types that are commonly used – window units and central ACs. Window units are used to cool single room areas, such as bedrooms, meeting rooms, and single occupancy offices. Central ACs are used to cool an entire house or an entire floor in a building, and it is more powerful than a window unit.

What is an HVAC system?

HVAC or Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning is a system that provides both heating and cooling to residences and establishments. The three main functions of an HVAC system work together, especially in providing air quality and thermal comfort.

There are four common types of HVAC systems – split systems, hybrid systems, duct-free systems, and packaged heating and air systems. The most famous among these systems and is widely used by different households is the standard split system. Not only are they the most affordable type of HVAC systems, they can also make a great deal of saving energy consumption. The only disadvantage on split HVAC systems is that it requires ductwork, and installation of ductwork can be too costly. But overall, it is the most popular residential HVAC system used.

The Difference between AC and HVAC Systems

So, how do these two systems really differ?

  • An HVAC system heats, ventilates, and cools your home, while an AC system is only responsible in cooling your home.
  • Air conditioners cannot circulate air inside your home, it just simply pulls the air outside, cools it, and then blows it back inside.
  • An HVAC system is like a 3-in-1 working system, where all kinds of temperature that you will be needing inside your house can be provided by the system.
